golfValderrama

Ranked the number one course in continental Europe, Valderrama has hosted many major tournaments including the 1997 Ryder Cup. Lush tree lined fairly flat fairways and immaculate elevated greens give this course the recognition it so deserves. A private club with limited access between 12.00 and 14.00, it is usually necessary to book many weeks in advance, although the restaurant is open to visitors Thursday & Friday evenings & Sunday lunch. Also has a 9 hole par 3 course & a museum of priceless golfing memorabilia. The strategic difficulty, omnipresent trees, the size of the bunkers and a few water hazards keep the player constantly on his wits for every stroke. The pressure is made worse when it comes to reading the greens. Don't bother about playing to your handicap, as even the top champion’s find making par a tough enough challenge at Valderrama. Soft spikes only. Par 72 6595 yards

golfLos Flamingos

While playing golf in Spain, why not try theFlamingos Golf Club which is described as "The must of Golf" designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido & opened in 2001. The Rosa course represents a garden of a Tuscan Villa & on some of the fairways and borders of the course you will find Roman columns, classic style statues and marble bridges. The carefully designed 18 holes at Flamingos Golf Club provide breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, Africa and Gibraltar. The "Arroyo Del Taraje" stream passes through the course and ends in a lake, which provides a natural border at the end of tees, 1 and 10. The smallest detail has been taken into consideration with each hole being defined by its own trees such as cypresses, oranges, jacarandas, pines, olives, chestnuts, pomegranate and many more. A technically demanding course - particularly over the front nine, with large, undulating & raised greens adding to what is regarded as a fair challenge for all. A second course The Flamingo Blanco [18 holes - par 64], + golf school, sports, health & fitness centre opened in 2003. Nearest Cities:- Marbella - 10 km, Estepona - 10 km, Málaga - 72 km. golfAnoreta

Anoreta Golf Course is not only a beautiful course but an interesting and challenging one as well. Water features heavily with it found on eleven holes and three sides of the 17th green. Anoreta is the first course designed by Jose-Maria Cañizares (Ryder cup Fame) and has created an interesting challenge where water plays a big part. Although the fairways and greens are generally wide, with water hazards on eleven holes accuracy becomes important. The clubhouse is a lovely old building converted to more modern standards; with a restaurant and bar. Anoreta also provides good practice facilities with a driving range and golf lessons available. golfGuadalhorce

On the Eastern side of Malaga airport and a little difficult to find, Guadalhorce is worth the trip with a club house that is an 18th century Andalucian mansion which has been restored in grand style. It is a friendly, family orientated club with additional facilities such as pools, tennis & saunas. The first nine are a bit hilly and fairly open with a distinctively English ‘parkland’ feel about it, with its slightly rolling terrain and tricky greens. The back nine, however, is flatter with more of an American style with lakes, tropical vegetation and raised greens. Many of the greens indeed are extremely large, and in some cases they are shared between two holes, the 6th and the 8th for example and also the 12th & 16th. Par 72 6446 yards

golfLauro

The Los Caracolillos course is the last designed by the Italian golf architect Folco Nardi, who sadly did not live to see the course finished. The clubhouse is a 200 year old Andalusian farm house & since opening in 1992 the course has hosted several major amateur tournaments. Located 1000 feet above sea level and set in beautiful countryside, Lauro is an interesting golf course with nine lakes and lots of olive trees. Inland from Malaga and Mijas at Alhaurin de la Torre, Lauro golf course is relatively flat parkland-style course with great views over the valley & Malaga Bay. Lauro has opened a spectacular third loop of nine holes which bring variety, height and depth to the complex, with all the holes named after famous bullfighters. 1 – 18 Par 72 6258 yards

golfTorrequebrada

Designed by Spain’s most famous golf architect Jose Gancedo, he has used the contours of the region to produce a course where each hole is individual. Torrequabrada opened in 1976 & has hosted many top tournaments – including the Spanish Open. It is a case of ‘he who dares…’on this quite difficult track, with water hazards on 9 holes, numerous strategically placed bunkers, 8 dog-legs & then there is the wind! Nicknamed locally as the ‘beast’ the course is situated between the Mediterranean sea and the mountains and is rich in tropical vegetation and birds. With a hotel on the premises, in addition to the usual range of facilities includes a pool and casino. Soft spikes only Par 72 6340 yards

golfAlhaurin

Situated between Mijas & Coin on the road from Fuengirola to Alhaurin el Grande, the course has majestic views of mountains to the north & Africa & the Med to the south. Facilities include driving range etc + riding & tennis. The main golf course is of international quality with many challenging holes set amongst natural terrain, which includes pine woods & many hazards. golfMijas

A 2 course complex with both having been designed by Robert Trent Jones in their own individual styles & opened in the mid-70’s. Still one of the busiest venues on the Costa del Sol, golfers of all levels will find something to suit them with a great club house atmosphere which has added to its popularity. Los Lagos [the lakes] has plenty of variety with its wide fairways and greens, exotic Araucalia pines & perfumed jacaranda trees & very little rough but lots of water [7 thirsty water hazards]. Los Olivos [the olives] is tighter, not as long but the tougher of the two courses. It has been completely refurbished with the greens having been enlarged by up to 50 percent, improved tees and the lake area that effects the sixth, seventh, eighth and eighteenth holes has been entirely rebuilt. The greens are beautifully kept and the course never fails to disappoint. Soft spikes required Los Lagos : Par 71, 6607 yards; Los Olivos : Par 70, 6160 yards.

golfSantana

Santana Golf course is spectacular to say the least, both for its design (by Cabell Robinson) and its location as it is situated on an old avocado plantation that has retained all its former flavour. Located in Mijas's "Golf Valley", and opened in January 2004, the layout is flat, well defined wide fairways, expansive greens and strategically located paths between the avocado & orange trees. Situated between two rivers, with a creek passing through the course provides the sensation of being in an absolutely natural environment, away from the hustle and bustle of the coast, yet being just a few hundred metres from the sea. golfCabopino

Cabopino is a spectacular modern course and opened up in April 2001, with its lovely umbrella pines above the marina. The best way to describe this course would be short but sweet, because this course offers three Par-3's, two Par-5's and thirteen Par-4's. All the usual facilities available. Cabopino golf course has recycled water from a nearby plant; and the lakes affecting the play on the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th holes. The course offers a stiff challenge for high handicap players who will have to use all clubs in their bag & low handicappers will have to take risks if they want good results. The greens are large with some with platforms and are usually in excellent condition. Par 71 5958 yards

golfSanta Maria

Amongst the elite golf clubs of the Costa del Sol, the Santa Maria has been designed in the English style in a spectacular valley providing views of the mountains & the Mediterranean. golfMarbella CC

Opened in 1994, this Robert Trent Jones designed course is very popular & has a packed social calendar. Gently undulating fairways meander between olive groves to produce one of the most exciting & testing golf courses & yet one that will provide an enjoyable round for players of all abilities. Large bunkers protect the greens, several water hazards come into play and the rough can also be quite difficult. The Marbella golf course starts off fairly hilly, then starts to level out into more open flat terrain. A typical Robert Trent Jones design, with its sweeping fairways, abundant bunkers and large undulating greens, several holes require accurate and brave tee shots to get across ravines and gulleys. golfSanta Clara

Situated in one of the most exclusive areas of Marbella with luxurious apartments and villas grouped around the dramatic greens and fairways of the golf course. The long awaited Santa Clara golf course opened for play in the early summer of 2001. For months motorists had pondered longingly at its greens, as they sped past on the N-340 just outside Marbella opposite the Los Montrose hotel. Enrique Canales the golf course designer and the Santa Clara owners are perfectionists so there was no hurry to open. A new design concept, it is described as parkland, a few gradients, large bunkers & many trees and also ‘boasts’ 75% surface as ‘non-rough’. This course offers a spectacular and unforgettable round of golf, offering a moderately difficult challenge that will suit players of all abilities. Par 71 6114 yards

golfRio Real

Rio Real Golf Course was designed by the foremost Spanish golf architect Javier Arana and opened in 1965. Spreading over a beautiful valley, the course is set in splendid surroundings on gently undulating terrain, softly sloping toward the Mediterranean. Backed by the Sierra Bermeja which culminates at 1500 metres it forms a natural shelter and creates a subtropical climate even during the winter months which are extremely mild. The Real River crosses the course several times. Although it is mainly flat, the course is not easy with plenty of natural hazards such as ravines making distance often difficult to judge. In the past year the club has benefited from several major improvements, namely replanted fairways, new greens, enlargement of cart paths and refurbishment of the clubhouse and its facilities. Rio Real is one of the top 3 courses in Costa del Sol and in 2002 was considered the most improved course of the year. Par 72 6707 yards

golfLos Naranjos

Under the direction of Christer Sorensson, the Los Naranjos golf club is run according to the philosophy that 'golf means more than just hitting a ball' and this is amply illustrated in the club house, which bills itself as a total golfing experience and 'the Costa del Sol’s friendly golf club'. Another Robert Trent Jones masterpiece, Los Naranjos’ front nine are rolling, wide and open, whilst the back nine are flat, very tight and played through the beautiful orange groves which gave the course its name. Los Naranjos opened in 1977 but has recently undergone a programme of improvements including new greens and a computer controlled irrigation system. golfLa Quinta

Designed by Manuel Pinero and Antonio Garrido La Quinta – which opened in 1989 - is in the Benahavis valley near Marbella. The club house is one of the best equipped on the coast with La Quinta fast developing a reputation as host of the prestigious charity pro-am tournament. La Quinta is 27 holes of golf located in the heart of the Marbella's Golf valley with the best of panoramic views of the mountain and the Marbella coastline. One of the most charismatic & attractive clubs in Spain, it is designed to test the ability of all golfers with its narrow fairways that roll towards the fast greens. A successful round on this golf course requires not only accuracy in order to avoid its trees, water hazards and the large albeit shallow sand traps along the fairways, but also stamina, for it is quite hilly. There are 3 ‘loops’ of 9 holes which can be played either separately or together & they each lead you back to the club house past the Pinero-managed Golf Academy.. golfLos Arqueros

Los Arqueros Golf Course was the first designed by Seve Ballesteros & opened in 1991 Imaginative and sometimes quite spectacular, Los Arqueros Golf Course is set in one of the most tranquil & stunning settings on the coast. From the road and arid landscape leading to Ronda, the first impression is one of an extremely hilly golf course. This is not quite the case, but the steep slopes do call for the use of a buggy & whilst the course is not too long, it is often tight and over-cautious approach shots will bring the hazards into play. The course should appeal to attacking golfers, as it will reward bold shots. This is particularly true for players who fade the ball or who are specialists of high shots aimed at the smallish greens, which have little in the way of traps. In addition to the full range of facilities, Los Aqrqueros has squash courts, gym & sauna. Par 71 5837 yards

golfMonte Mayor

This is one the most spectacular course's in the region with breathtaking views on every hole, and in fact is repeatedly rated as one of the best in the whole of Spain. Designed by the legendary architect Jose Gancedo, whose philosophy is ‘why move the earth when a golf hole should follow the natural contours?’ the course features a challenging layout over mountainous terrain for the bold & the accurate. Right in the mountains and very exposed to the wind, it reserves every sort of surprise to the extent where certain "normal" holes look positively insipid. The Monte Mayor golf course winds its way through rocks & streams, crosses gorges and runs down hills amidst wild thick vegetation. The local rules are pretty lenient, as any lost ball is considered to be in a side water hazard. Here you feel alone in the hilly terrain, with only your golf as your friend, or foe depending on how your game is. It is no accident to see that Monte Mayor Golf Course emblem is a bull. You have to fight it, stave off its charges and side step its attacks. Buggy essential Par 71 5890 yards

golfMarbella Resort

Marbella Club Golf Resort is situated in the Benahavis hills and is a magnificent course which demands precision and accuracy. Marbella Club Golf Resort enjoys spectacular views of Gibraltar, the African Coastline, the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains. The course runs through cork oaks, pines and local indigenous plants and precise shots are needed to the large greens. The front nine provides the unique experience of three consecutive par 5's, which not only represents a severe test early in the round but also some of the most picturesque scenery on the course. The Marbella Club Golf Resort is not the Marbella Golf and Country Club, they aren’t close together and they are completely different courses. Par 73 Yellow 5891m

golfAtalaya

This is the official headquarters of the PGA of Europe with two very contrasting 18 hole courses. Atalaya offers one of the largest driving ranges in Spain, supplies tuition in several languages & provides all the usual facilities. The New Course – which was opened in 1991, is more gently sloping & a little more difficult than its sister & is a real challenge for all levels of golfers. Maybe a little more difficult as tee shots have to be accurate. Atalaya Golf and Country Club has been one of the most popular clubs on the Costa del Sol since its opening in 1968. Situated between Marbella and Estepona, it is suitable for all levels of play from total beginners to international pros, due to the diversity of its tees. golfEl-Paraiso

El Paraiso Golf course was carefully designed to achieve a peaceful atmosphere through the hundreds of mature pine trees and vegetation, strategically placed lakes and bunkers. It is a traditional ‘British’ club with an international membership with a friendly, social atmosphere where visitors are most welcome. Built on hilly terrain and sloping toward the sea this is definitely a course of two distinctly different 9 holes where visiting handicap golfers can enter their weekly competitions Soft spikes required. Amongst its many water hazards and dangerous rough you can play what is reputedly the longest golf hole in Spain, known locally as the "ski-run" which stretches 625 yards off the white tee. A hilly, testing course, La Duquesa has quite narrow fairways on the front 9, followed by a second 9 with a bit more room to play with but still far from easy. With 5 par 3s; 8 par 4s & 5 par 5s undulating greens + a couple of man-made lakes, good course management will win over power here. All the usual facilities + squash, Jacuzzi & tennis. The facilities include a Golf Academy, 3-hole warm-up course, health club, gym etc. Suitable for golfers of all abilities, although plenty of water, high lipped fairway bunkers, very hilly terrain & narrow fairways means you need to think your way around the course & probably best to leave your driver in the bag.
